STRUCTURED LITERACY PROJECT: CONTENT DEVELOPER

Payroll Status: Part-time, temporary (15-20 hours/week)

Location: Work From Home; Onsite at The Schenck School and/or Purpose Built Schools Atlanta

 

The Dyslexia Resource at The Schenck School is looking for an innovative content developer/subject matter expert to write content for the development of Structured Literacy digital modules aligned with the science of reading and The Schenck School (TSS) reading model. As a content developer/subject matter expert, duties will include collaborating with the Project Content Lead and Digital Instructional Design team, evaluating project needs and recommending module content, designing and/or procuring instructional resources and video examples of appropriate Structured Literacy practices identified in TSS classrooms or Purpose Built Schools Atlanta (PBSA) classrooms by grade bands (i.e., K-2, 3-4, and 5-6) for Tiers 1 and 2 instruction. The Content Developer may also be required to assist with the development of videos, editing content and/or instructional resources for modules, and field testing digital products in collaboration with a digital instructional designer.

To ensure success, a content developer/ subject matter expert should be current on research related to structured literacy content and instructional approaches, possess an exceptional track record in bridging research with effective classroom practice that addresses the diverse needs of students in grades K-2. A successful candidate has excellent time management skills to meet project deadlines, has a history of effective collaboration, and communicates effectively with a variety of stakeholders.

 

PURPOSE/GOALS:

  • To develop written content for the Structured Literacy Digital Project in collaboration with the Director of Research & Development / Project Content Lead
  • Goals of the Structured Literacy Digital Project
    • Will help all students, harm none, and positively impact struggling readers (see Spear-Swerling, 2015, Big Dippers SVR quadrants, 2021) as evidenced by student outcome data
    • Will extend the legacy of David Schenck
    • Will build on partnership and learnings from Purpose Built Schools Atlanta
    • Will be a contribution to the larger constellation of teacher training and professional development (e.g., Big Dippers, Pathways to Proficient Reading, Reaching All Readers)
    • Will extend opportunities to serve all school communities including diverse and underserved communities

 

REQUIREMENTS:

The Content Developer will use her/his extensive knowledge of structured literacy (i.e., content and instructional approaches) and experience with the teaching of reading to develop content modules accessible to educators with direct implementation in mind (i.e., can be used in the classroom the next day). While the content will be anchored in the science of reading and the science of the teaching of reading, this digital product will be focused on practical application of the science in order to impact educator practice and result in positive student outcomes.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Understand and have experience in teaching all aspects of reading, based on the content and instructional principles of structured literacy (e.g., Gough & Tunmer, 1986; International Dyslexia Association, 2020, Report of the National Reading Panel, 2000; Scarborough, 2001; Seidenberg, 2017; Wasowicz, 2021)
  • Understand and have knowledge of the application of The Schenck School Reading Model in classrooms at the School
  • Understand the significance of a respectful and caring social and emotional learning environment for structured literacy instruction (e.g., Kim & Snow, 2021; Spear-Swerling, 2022)
  • Understand and have experience in the teaching of reading among diverse populations including all profiles of struggling readers (as defined by Gough & Tunmer, 1986; Spear-Swerling, 2015, 2022)
  • Understand and have experience in collaborating with community based partners

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, graduate degree preferred
  • Extensive and documented experience with structured literacy content and principles of instruction
  • Extensive education experience across diverse learning environments
  • Flexibility and a willingness to prioritize a mission and goal of improving the teaching of reading to positively impact outcomes for all students
