Dyslexia Training Classes

The Dyslexia Resource's Orton-Gillingham training program is structured for parents, individuals and educators. The courses and classes are designed for those interested in increasing their knowledge of the Orton-Gillingham approach. Please note that certain classes have prerequisites. Please contact the Dyslexia Resource office for more information or with questions about custom group courses.

Associate Coursework

Offered September to May
Wednesday mornings
8:15am - 10:00am

The Orton-Gillingham Associate Level Class is a comprehensive, nine month class. The class advances an antendees understanding of the specific procedures of the Orton-Gillingham Approach and the underlying principles in teaching reading, spelling and vocabulary to dyslexic students. Teachers learn how to instruct struggling readers in ways that unlock the code of reading and spelling.

Classroom Educator

Offered throughout the year

The Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator class focuses on the principles and fundamentals of the Orton-Gillingham Approach. This class will provide understanding of dyslexia, characteristics of the dyslexic learner, specific procedures for teaching these students primarily in reading and spelling, and adminstration of informal assessments.

The Orton-Gillingham Subscriber Course is appropriate and designed for individuals seeking an initial overview about dyslexia and the Orton-Gillingham Approach.

Beyond the Basics

Offered in the summer

Beyond the Basics will review the Orton-Gillingham Approach and the concepts covered in the Classroom Educator class. In addition, more advanced morphology including Latin and Greek roots, prefixes and suffixes, and accenting rules targeting advanced decoding will be covered. Beyond the Basics will also further a practitioners understanding of enriching and extending a lesson plan to include more in depth practice with fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written expression. Content provided will focus on differentiation, diagnostic and prescriptive teaching, and progress monitoring.

The Dyslexia Resource provides workshops and certified coursework on various topics. These can also be customized for larger groups and professional development.

Practicum Programs

Open for application in the fall

The Dyslexia Resource offers practicum programs at the Classroom Educator, Associate, and Certified Levels of membership through the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE).

Interpreting Psychological testing

Offered over the fall semester
September through January.
Thursdays 7:30am - 9:00am.

The focus of Interpreting Psychoeducational Testing class is to gain a better understanding of psychological testing and how to use that knowledge to write a student profile and guide teachers/tutors in the planning of Orton-Gillingham lessons.
