ORTON-GILLINGHAM TRAINING COURSES

The Dyslexia Resource’s Orton-Gillingham training program is structured for parents, individuals and educators. The courses and classes are designed for those interested in increasing their knowledge of the Orton-Gillingham approach. Please note that certain classes have prerequisites. Please contact the Dyslexia Resource office for more information or with questions about custom group courses.


Associate Coursework

The Orton-Gillingham Associate Level Class is a comprehensive, nine month class. The class advances an attendees understanding of the specific procedures of the Orton-Gillingham Approach and the underlying principles in teaching reading, spelling and vocabulary to dyslexic students. Teachers learn how to instruct struggling readers in ways that unlock the code of reading and spelling.

  • No prerequisite needed
  • The completion of this course satisfies the coursework requirement at the Associate Level (Option A) of certification with the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA).
  • Offered September through May, Wednesday mornings, 8:15AM – 10:00AM EST

Classroom Educator

The Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator class focuses on the principles and fundamentals of the Orton-Gillingham Approach. This class will provide understanding of dyslexia, characteristics of the dyslexic learner, specific procedures for teaching these students primarily in reading and spelling, and adminstration of informal assessments.

  • No prerequisite needed
  • The completion of this course satisfies the coursework requirement at the Classroom Educator Level of certification with the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA).
  • Offered throughout the year. Days and times vary.

Subscriber Course

The Orton-Gillingham Subscriber Course is appropriate and designed for individuals seeking an initial overview about dyslexia and the Orton-Gillingham Approach.

  • No prerequisite needed
  • The completion of course enables you to become a member of the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) at the Subscriber Level.
  • Offered four times a year

Beyond the Basics

Beyond the Basics will review the Orton-Gillingham Approach and the concepts covered in the Classroom Educator class. In addition, more advanced morphology including Latin and Greek roots, prefixes and suffixes, and accenting rules targeting advanced decoding will be covered. Beyond the Basics will also further a practitioners understanding of enriching and extending a lesson plan to include more in depth practice with fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written expression. Content provided will focus on differentiation, diagnostic and prescriptive teaching, and progress monitoring.

  • Prerequisite needed: Classroom Educator
  • The completion of course satisfy the 60 hours of the coursework requirement at the Associate Level of certification with the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA).
  • Offered in the summer. Days and times vary.

Workshops/Certified Coursework

The Dyslexia Resource provides workshops and certified coursework on various topics. These can also be customized for larger groups and professional development.

  • There is no prerequisite for our workshops but having coursework at the Classroom Educator Level or Associate Level is highly preferred.
  • Offered throughout the school year and in the summers. Days and times vary.

Practicum Programs

The Dyslexia Resource offers practicum programs at the Classroom Educator, Associate, and Certified Levels of membership through the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA).

  • Prerequisite: Appropriate Coursework is required before enrolling in a practicum
  • Practicum programs are open for application in the fall.

Interpreting Psychological Testing

The focus of Interpreting Psychoeducational Testing class is to gain a better understanding of psychological testing and how to use that knowledge to write a student profile and guide teachers/tutors in the planning of Orton-Gillingham lessons.

  • There is no prerequisite for this class but having coursework at the Classroom Educator Level or Associate Level is highly preferred.
  • The completion of this course that satisfies some of the coursework requirements at the Certified Level of certification with the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA).
  • Offered over the fall semester, September to January. Thursday mornings, 7:30AM – 9:00AM EST.
