Empowering Communities to Serve Dyslexic Learners

The Dyslexia Resource is a non-profit launched by The Schenck School as a means for sharing the reading expertise of the School with other struggling readers.

We are here to serve dyslexic learners. Our goal is to empower communities to support and educate these learners through our training programs, tutoring services, and community partnerships.

Teacher Training

The Dyslexia Resource training program is designed for tutors and educators who are interested in learning more about dyslexia and reading remediation using the Orton-Gillingham Approach. Training is offered in a variety of formats, including year-long, intensive courses, week-long courses, and workshops. We are an Accredited Training Site through the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, and offer coursework and practicums tailored to the goals of the trainee. Ultimately, we give teachers, tutors, and educators access to the information and knowledge they need to support a struggling reader.

The Dyslexia Resource connects highly-trained tutors with students, schools and community partners in need. We do this through direct services with partner schools and one-to-one or small group tutoring. The Dyslexia Resource has a partnership with Purpose Built Schools Atlanta to provide direct services to students at Thomasville Heights and Slater Elementary Schools.  Part of the Atlanta Public Schools system, both schools were historically low performing for many years and are located in economically depressed areas of Atlanta. The Dyslexia Resource employs remediation specialists to provide Orton-Gillingham tutoring two-four times weekly to students who are struggling with reading in first, second, third, and fourth grades. In the first two years of this partnership, we reached over 200 children and are expanding our efforts in year three.

Additional Community Partners in this Work Include

  • Hill Learning Center

    The Hill Learning Center developed an iPad app that allows our remediation specialists to work with small groups while working at each child’s pace and automatically track progress along the way.  The Zeist Foundation provided grant funding to purchase the app and iPads.

  • Zeist Foundation

    The Zeist Foundation also provided grant funding for teachers from THES and Slater Elementary to participate in the University of Georgia’s Graduate Certificate in Dyslexia program.  UGA and The Dyslexia Resource are working together to provide OG training and a rich practicum experience for this cohort and planning for an additional group next year.

  • Georgia State University

    Georgia State University provided graduate students in their Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders with clinical experience while helping TDR complete baseline assessments at THES.  Georgia State continues to be a partner in evaluating research-based interventions.

Another way to empower communities to help dyslexic learners is through education and advocacy. The Dyslexia Resource does this through partnerships, providing online resources, and hosting community events. The Dyslexia Resource, in partnership with The Schenck School, is working with Made By Dyslexia, the global charity supported by Sir Richard Branson, and technology giant Microsoft to inform global audiences about dyslexia. Schenck School faculty joined celebrities and experts including Sir Richard Branson, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, and Maggie Aderin-Pocock to create Dyslexia Awareness training films. The modules are designed to help teachers and educators understand dyslexia, both its strengths and challenges, gain essential knowledge in how to recognize and support it, and create dyslexia-inclusive classrooms.
